Chicken is one of the most versatile sources of protein, and there are many different ways of cooking it. Plus, you can choose from chicken wings, breasts, thighs and drumsticks, and each cooking technique brings out a different delicious flavor.

How Long Does It Take to Cook Chicken?
The amount of time it takes to cook chicken depends on temperature and cooking method. And remember, the best way to check if your chicken is done is by measuring the internal temperature. The safe minimum cooking temperature for chicken is 165°F. If you’re just learning how to cook chicken, you might want to consider investing in a digital cooking thermometer.
Cooking Style | Temperature and Timing |
---|---|
Roast | Roast a whole chicken for about 20 minutes per pound at 350°F, plus an additional 15 minutes. |
Bake | Bake a 6 oz. chicken breast for about 25-30 minutes at 350°F. |
Braise | Lightly pan-fry chicken thighs for about 5 minutes on each side. Add the chicken along with other necessary ingredients to a pot, cover and place in an oven set to 325°F for about 45 minutes. |
Poach | Add chicken to boiling water in a pot on your stovetop. Cook 10 minutes, turn off heat, flip chicken and let simmer for another 15 minutes. |
Pan‑fry | Pan-fry each piece of chicken for about 10 minutes in 325°F oil. |
Fry | Each piece of chicken will vary slightly in how long it needs to be fried, but an average piece of chicken takes about 14 minutes in 350°F oil. |
Broil | Broil a 6 oz. chicken breast or thigh for 15-18 minutes. |
Air Fry | Air fry a 6 oz. chicken breast for 7-10 minutes. |
Instant Pot | Cook a fresh chicken breast for 8-10 minutes (time for frozen chicken is longer). |
