5 Dietitian-Approved Ways to Spice Up Your Morning Coffee
by Emily Harland, RDN, CSO, LDN
There isn’t anything much better than enjoying a warm cup of coffee in the morning! Coffee is packed with antioxidants and phytonutrients that can help ward off disease. However, many coffee beverages are packed with sugar and additives that are not so good for you. While there are certainly coffee purists out there who drink black coffee alone, there’s no denying that adding a little excitement to your normal coffee routine can be a fun and flavorful change. Read on for some delicious ways to spice up your coffee without the sugar:
1. Cinnamon
This spice is known for its numerous anti-inflammatory benefits and adds a sensation of sweetness that decreases the need for added sugar. Cinnamon may also support your immune system. Just a little sprinkle helps your drink feel even more like fall.
2. Vanilla extract
If you love the creamy taste of vanilla, try adding a drop of vanilla extract to your coffee grounds next time you brew a cup. Adding a drop or two during the brewing process ensures you get the best flavor throughout.
3. Half-and-half
If you’re looking for the luscious texture of coffee creamer without the added sugar of the flavored varieties, then half-and-half should be your go-to. Half-and-half is a simple blend of equal parts whole milk and light cream, and just a little bit goes a long way. Try adding a tablespoon to your next cup for a creamy flavor and texture.
4. Almond milk
For those looking for a dairy alternative to half-and-half, almond milk makes a great substitute that blends well into drip coffee and lattes. Be sure to use unsweetened almond milk to avoid added sugar.
5. Peppermint oil
A little peppermint oil in your coffee adds a festive and energizing treat to your day. To prepare it, add 2-3 drops to your pot during the brewing process. Just be sure to use peppermint oil sparingly as you don’t want to go overboard with this strong flavor.
