Anise Salad with Lemon and Basil

Anise has a licorice taste which goes well with basil and lemon.

  • 2 large anise bulbs
  • 2 Tbsp. olive oil
  • 2 Tbsp. lemon juice
  • 2 sprigs fresh thyme
  • ⅛ tsp. salt
  • ⅛ tsp. ground black pepper
  • 3 Tbsp. sunflower seeds
  • 8 fresh basil leaves


  • Trim ends from anise bulbs and remove outer layer. Remove the large tough fronds and discard. Cut the bulb into quarters lengthwise, then into thin strips.
  • Combine olive oil, lemon juice, thyme, salt, and pepper in a salad bowl. Add sliced anise bulb and toss to coat.
  • Add sunflower seeds and basil and serve immediately.
