Apple and Prune Sauce for Game

These fruits are a natural with game but also go well with chicken, turkey, and pork. This simple sauce keeps in the refrigerator for at least a week.

  • 12 pitted prunes, cut into pieces
  • 1 cup apple cider
  • 3 large Granny Smith or other tart apples, peeled, cored, and chopped
  • Juice of 1 orange
  • ¼" slice lemon, skin on
  • 1 tsp. ground cinnamon
  • ½ tsp. ground cloves
  • 4 Tbsp. brown sugar
  • ¼ tsp. salt


  • Soak the prunes in the cider for 2 hours or until they absorb all of the liquid. Transfer prunes to a large saucepan.
  • Add apples, orange juice, lemon slice, cinnamon, cloves, brown sugar, and salt. Cover and heat 20 minutes over medium heat until soft, adding more cider if necessary.
