Belgian Loaf

  • 2 cups sugar
  • 2 cups raisins
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1 cup butter
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp. baking soda
  • 1 tsp. cream of tartar
  • 8 oz. glacéed cherries


  • Preheat oven to 350°F. Line 2 loaf pans (8½" × 4½" × 2½") with parchment paper, allowing ½" to extend above the sides.
  • Stir together the sugar, raisins, milk, and butter in a saucepan and bring to a boil. Remove from heat, pour into a bowl, and let cool. In another bowl, combine the flour, baking soda, cream of tartar, and cherries and stir to mix. Add the flour mixture to the sugar mixture and mix well. Pour into the prepared pans.
  • Bake for 40 minutes, or until a knife comes out clean. Cool on a rack.
