Black Satin Cake

  • ½ cup butter
  • 4 Tbsp. unsweetened cocoa powder
  • ½ cup vegetable oil
  • 1 cup water
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups sugar
  • ½ cup buttermilk
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 tsp. baking soda
  • 1 tsp. vanilla extract
  • ½ cup butter
  • 1½ cups buttermilk
  • 2 Tbsp. unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 lb. confectioners’ sugar
  • ½ tsp. salt
  • ½ tsp. vanilla extract


  • Preheat oven to 400°F. Grease a 9" × 13" pan.
  • Put butter, cocoa, oil, and water in a saucepan and bring to a boil. Remove from the heat. Sift together the flour and sugar into a large bowl. Pour the chocolate sauce over the flour mixture and mix well. In another bowl, beat together the buttermilk, eggs, baking soda, and vanilla and add to the chocolate mixture. Pour into the prepared pan.
  • Bake for 20 minutes, or until a knife comes out clean.
  • Meanwhile, make the frosting: Put the butter, cocoa, and buttermilk in a saucepan and bring to a boil. Remove from the heat and add the sugar, salt, and vanilla, mixing well.
  • Remove the cake from the oven and frost it immediately. Let the cake cool completely in the pan.
