Brazilian-Style Hot Chocolate (Chocolate Quente Cremoso)

Brazilian hot chocolate tends to be extra creamy and thick with a touch of cinnamon, the perfect vehicle for dipping churros (doughnut sticks).

  • 2 cups milk
  • 4 Tbsp. sugar
  • 3 Tbsp. cocoa powder
  • 1 Tbsp. cornstarch
  • 1⁄4 tsp. salt
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 1⁄2 cup heavy cream
  • 1⁄2 tsp. vanilla
  • 1⁄4 cup whipped cream


  • Place the milk, sugar, cocoa powder, cornstarch, and salt in a blender, and process until smooth.
  • Pour the mixture into a small saucepan. Add the cinnamon stick and heat mixture over medium-low heat, stirring constantly, until it comes to a simmer and thickens.
  • Remove from heat and discard cinnamon stick. Stir in the cream and the vanilla until smooth.
  • Serve warm, with a dollop of whipped cream.
