Buttermilk Cutter Cookies

  • 2½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp. baking powder
  • ¼ tsp. salt
  • ½ tsp. baking soda
  • ½ cup vegetable shortening
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • ½ cup buttermilk
  • ½ tsp. vanilla extract


  • Preheat oven to 350°F.
  • Sift together the dry ingredients and set aside. Cream the shortening and sugar together well, then add the egg and beat well. Add the dry ingredients alternately with the buttermilk and vanilla.
  • Roll on a lightly floured board to no more than ¼" thickness. Cut with cookie cutters and bake on a greased cookie sheet about 15 minutes. If desired, cookies can be sprinkled with plain or colored sugars before baking, or can be iced after they’re cool.
