Serves: 36

Ingredients

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp. baking soda
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 8 tbsp. (1 stick) butter, softened
  • 3⁄4 cup sugar
  • 3⁄4 cup brown sugar
  • 1 tsp. vanilla extract
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 1⁄4 cup chocolate chips, divided, plus more for decorating (larger chocolate chips with a traditional drop shape work best

Directions

  • Preheat oven to 375°F. Grease baking sheet with nonstick cooking spray, or line with silicone baking mat or parchment paper.
  • In medium bowl, whisk flour, baking soda and salt; set aside. In large bowl with hand mixer or in bowl of stand mixer fitted with paddle attachment, beat butter, sugars and vanilla until well combined. Add eggs, one at a time; beat until creamy, scraping sides of bowl as necessary. Add flour mixture, half at a time; beat slowly until just combined. Stir in 1 cup chocolate chips.
  • Drop 1-inch mounds of dough on baking sheet, spaced slightly apart. Place additional 1–3 chocolate chips, flat-side up, on each cookie (1 will become a spider). Bake 8–12 minutes or until very edges of cookies are golden. Allow to cool completely.
  • Place remaining ¼ cup chocolate chips in small plastic bag; seal top. Heat water in microwave-safe mug until hot, but not boiling. Submerge bottom of bag in water until chocolate melts. Use sharp scissors to snip tiny corner from bag. Carefully pipe 8 thin chocolate legs around one flat chocolate chip to create a spider. Allow to cool before serving. Store in an airtight container.
