A classic martini is made with icy gin—although some folks prefer vodka—and dry vermouth. An olive and a twist of lemon peel are standard garnishes. Substitute a cocktail onion for the olive and you’ve got a Gibson.

- 5 oz. gin, preferably chilled
- 1 oz. dry vermouth
- 2 twists lemon peel
- 2 olives
- Fill a cocktail shaker with ice.
- Pour gin and vermouth into the shaker, cover, and shake vigorously.
- Strain mixture into two martini glasses and garnish each with a skewered olive and lemon twist.
