Fried Mozzarella Sticks

This popular restaurant appetizer is surprisingly easy to make at home. Serve with tomato sauce for dipping.

  • 2 cups vegetable oil
  • 1 lb. block mozzarella cheese
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1⁄4 cup water
  • 1 1⁄2 cups Italian breadcrumbs
  • 1⁄2 tsp. granulated garlic
  • 1⁄2 tsp. dried oregano
  • 1⁄2 tsp. dried basil
  • 2⁄3 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1⁄3 cup cornstarch


  • Preheat oil in a deep fryer to 350°F.
  • Slice the block of cheese lengthwise into 1⁄2-inch sections. Cut each section in half.
  • In a small bowl, beat the eggs with water. In another small bowl, mix the breadcrumbs, garlic, oregano, and basil. In another small bowl, blend the flour with the cornstarch.
  • Dip the cheese pieces in flour, then in egg wash, then coat with breadcrumbs.
  • Place carefully in hot oil and fry until golden brown, about 30 seconds. Drain on paper towels.
