Irish Soda Bread with Raisins

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 3 tsp. baking powder
  • 1 tsp. baking soda
  • 1⁄4 cup sugar
  • 1⁄8 tsp. salt
  • 1⁄4 cup vegetable shortening
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 1⁄2 cups buttermilk
  • 1 cup raisins


  • Preheat oven to 375°F.
  • Combine flour, baking powder, baking soda, sugar, and salt. Cut in the shortening and set aside. Beat the egg well and add the buttermilk. Add egg mixture to dry ingredients along with raisins. Combine thoroughly.
  • Turn onto a floured work surface and knead briefly, for about 1 minute. Shape into a round loaf and place into a greased 9- or 10-inch skillet or pan. With a sharp knife, cut a cross extending over the top and sides of the bread and brush with milk. Bake for 50 to 60 minutes.
