Maple Baked Beans

Tailor these saucy Boston-style baked beans to your liking by adding extra molasses, a bit of cayenne, or some TVP crumbles for a meaty texture.

Ingredients

  • 3 cups navy beans, soaked in water to cover overnight and drained
  • 9 cups water
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • ⅔ cup maple syrup
  • ¼ cup barbecue sauce
  • 2 Tbsp. molasses
  • 1 Tbsp. Dijon mustard
  • 1 Tbsp. chili powder
  • 1 tsp. paprika
  • 1½ tsp. salt
  • ¾ tsp. ground black pepper

Directions

  • Preheat oven to 350°F.
  • In a large Dutch oven over high heat, combine all ingredients. Bring to a rolling boil. Cover and move Dutch oven to oven and bake beans for 1½ hours, stirring once or twice. Uncover and cook 1 more hour.
