Mashed Potatoes with Buttermilk

Mashed potatoes don’t have to be full of fat. Buttermilk adds a creamy richness to this classic dish.

  • 3 lbs. potatoes, peeled and quartered
  • 2 Tbsp. butter
  • 1½ cups buttermilk
  • ⅛ tsp. nutmeg
  • ½ tsp. salt
  • ⅛ tsp. black pepper


  • Place potatoes in a large pot with water to cover. Bring to a boil, cover, reduce the heat to medium, and cook until tender, about 20 minutes.
  • When potatoes are done, drain, return to the hot pot and mash until smooth. Gradually add the buttermilk, stirring constantly. Stir in nutmeg, salt, and pepper. Serve immediately.
