Pecan Sandies

If a flavoring called Vanilla Butter Nut is available at your grocery store, use 1 teaspoon of that in place of 1 teaspoon of the vanilla. It gives a buttery and nutty flavor that enhances these cookies.

  • ½ cup unsalted butter
  • ½ cup vegetable oil
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar
  • ¼ cup brown sugar
  • ½ cup confectioners’ sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 tsp. vanilla extract
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • ½ tsp. baking soda
  • ½ tsp. cream of tartar
  • ½ tsp. salt
  • 1 cup chopped pecans
  • ¼ cup turbinado sugar


  • Cream together butter and oil until very well blended. Beat in granulated sugar and brown sugar until very smooth. Beat in confectioners’ sugar and egg. Stir in vanilla.
  • Combine flour, baking soda, cream of tartar, and salt; stir into creamed mixture. Fold in pecans. Chill overnight.
  • Preheat oven to 375°F.
  • Roll teaspoons of dough into balls and then roll in turbinado sugar. Flatten slightly with a glass dipped in turbinado sugar. Place 2" apart on ungreased baking sheets.
  • Bake 10–12 minutes, or until edges are golden brown. Cool.
