Raisin Nut Cookies

Some people prefer the raisins be plumped when they go into the dough, others prefer the chewier quality of the dried raisins. See which you prefer.

  • 1 cup water
  • 2 cups golden raisins
  • 3½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp. baking powder
  • 1 tsp. baking soda
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1 tsp. ground cinnamon
  • ½ tsp. ground nutmeg
  • ½ cup butter, softened
  • ½ cup vegetable shortening
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • ¾ cup brown sugar
  • 1 tsp. vanilla extract
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup coarsely chopped walnuts


  • Bring the water to a boil; remove from heat. Place raisins in a bowl with water, cover; set aside to cool.
  • Preheat oven to 375°F. Lightly 2 large baking sheets.
  • Combine flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg; set aside. Cream butter, shortening, and sugars until fluffy. Beat in vanilla and eggs. Stir in raisins along with any water left on them. Blend in flour mixture and nuts.
  • Drop by tablespoons onto baking sheets; bake 12–15 minutes. Allow to cool 5 minutes before removing from baking sheet.
