Slow Cooker Spiced Buttered Rum

This warm, buttery, sweet, and spicy drink is like dessert in a mug; the perfect after-dinner beverage for sitting by a fire.

  • ½ cup unsalted butter
  • 8 cups water
  • 2 cups light brown sugar
  • ⅛ tsp. salt
  • ½ tsp. ground nutmeg
  • ⅛ tsp. ground cloves
  • 2 star anise pods
  • 3 cinnamon sticks
  • 2 whole vanilla beans
  • ¼ cup chopped crystallized ginger
  • 1 cup dark rum


  • Add the butter and 2 cups water to a 4-quart slow cooker. Cover and cook on high for 30 minutes, or until the butter is melted.
  • Stir in the brown sugar, the remaining 6 cups of water, salt, nutmeg, cloves, star anise pods, cinnamon sticks, vanilla beans, and crystallized ginger. Cover and cook on low for 4 hours.
  • Twenty minutes before serving, stir in the rum; cover, and cook for 20 minutes. To serve, ladle into heatproof mugs.
