Slow-Simmered Pizza Sauce

This basic, all-purpose pizza sauce can be prepared in large batches and frozen for later use.

Ingredients

  • 1 Tbsp. olive oil
  • 6 oz. tomato paste
  • 1 can (29 oz.) tomato sauce
  • 4 cloves garlic, pressed
  • 1 small onion, peeled and finely chopped
  • 1 tsp. sugar
  • 1 tsp. dried oregano
  • ½ tsp. dried basil
  • ¼ tsp. dried thyme
  • 1 tsp. crushed red pepper
  • ½ tsp. salt
  • 2 cups water

Directions

  • In a large kettle over medium-high heat, combine olive oil and tomato paste. Cook, stirring with a wooden spoon, for 2 minutes. Add tomato sauce and stir to dissolve paste in the sauce.
  • Add remaining ingredients. Bring to boil, then reduce heat to medium and simmer for 3 hours, stirring often. Cooked sauce should be reduced and thick.
