Serves: 8

Ingredients

  • 1 cup masa harina
  • ⅛ tsp. baking powder
  • ¼ tsp. salt
  • ¾ cup water
  • ¾ cup canola oil

Directions

  • Combine masa harina, baking powder, salt, and water in medium bowl. Use your hands to mix dough until a smooth ball is formed. Add more water if needed.
  • Divide dough into eight equal pieces and shape into balls. To shape sopes, place a dough ball between two pieces of plastic wrap. Use a flat-bottomed pot to flatten ball into a 2½" circle, about ¼" thick. Fold up the sides of the circle to make a ½" wall all the way around the edge.
  • Heat a dry skillet over high heat and brown the sopes on the flat side only, for about 1 minute.
  • In a small pot, heat oil to 350°F. Cook one sope at a time in the hot oil for 1–2 minutes, until browned. Drain sopes upside down on paper towels.
