Southern Fried Green Tomatoes

These tomatoes are crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside, packing the perfect bite. They are delicious on their own or use them in a BLT sandwich or wrap.

Ingredients
- 4 green tomatoes, cut ¼” thick
- 2 large eggs
- 1⁄2 cup buttermilk
- 1 tsp. hot sauce
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 cup yellow cornmeal
- 1 tsp. creole seasoning
- Peanut oil or vegetable oil, for frying
Directions
- Pat the tomato slices dry and set aside.
- In a shallow dish, add eggs, buttermilk and hot sauce. Whisk until well combined and set aside.
- In another shallow dish, combine flour, cornmeal and seasoning. Set aside.
- Dip tomato slices in egg mixture, then into flour mixture. Press mixture firmly into the tomatoes to ensure it adheres well. Set aside and repeat with remaining slices.
- Fill a large cast iron skillet with about 1” of oil. Heat oil to 350°F-375°F. Once oil is hot, work in batches, add a few slices of tomato and cook until golden brown, about 3-4 minutes.
- Prepare a platter with paper towels, then place the fried green tomatoes on the platter.
- Serve and refrigerate leftovers.
