Spiced Apple and Pear Spread

Make the most of in-season apples and pears in this easy alternative to apple or pear butter.

  • 4 medium baking apples, peeled, cored and sliced
  • 4 medium pears, peeled, cored and sliced
  • 1 cup apple cider
  • 1⁄2 cup honey
  • 1⁄4 tsp. ground ginger
  • 1⁄4 tsp. ground cinnamon
  • 1⁄4 tsp. ground nutmeg
  • 1⁄4 tsp. ground allspice
  • 3 vanilla beans, split
  • 3 star anise pods


  • Place all the ingredients into a Dutch oven. Bring to a boil over high heat and then reduce to a simmer over medium-low heat, stirring often, for 45 minutes, until the liquid is absorbed.
  • Allow to cool completely and remove vanilla beans and star anise pods. Set aside. Pour into the food processor and purée. Pour into clean glass jars, adding a vanilla bean and star anisepod to each jar. Refrigerate for up to 6 weeks.
