Spiced Apple and Pear Spread
Make the most of in-season apples and pears in this easy alternative to apple or pear butter.

- 4 medium baking apples, peeled, cored and sliced
- 4 medium pears, peeled, cored and sliced
- 1 cup apple cider
- ½ cup honey
- ¼ tsp. ground ginger
- ¼ tsp. ground cinnamon
- ¼ tsp. ground nutmeg
- ¼ tsp. ground allspice
- 3 vanilla beans, split
- 3 star anise pods
- Place all the ingredients into a Dutch oven. Bring to a boil over high heat and then reduce to a simmer over medium-low heat, stirring often, for 45 minutes, until the liquid is absorbed.
- Allow to cool completely and remove vanilla beans and star anise pods. Set aside. Pour into the food processor and purée. Pour into clean glass jars, adding a vanilla bean and star anisepod to each jar. Refrigerate for up to 6 weeks.
