Spiced Applesauce

If you have a food mill or tomato press, you can bake the apples with the skins on and extract them using the mill. Tart apples are better for this recipe.

  • 6 large apples
  • ¼ cup sugar
  • ¼ tsp. salt
  • 1 tsp. ground cinnamon
  • ¼ tsp. ground nutmeg
  • 2 whole cloves
  • 2 Tbsp. butter


  • Core and peel the apples. Place them in a small saucepan with 1" water. Bring to a boil over medium heat and cook for 15 minutes.
  • Remove the apples from the water and either run them through a food mill or through a blender.
  • Place the apple mash, sugar, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg in a skillet over low heat. Simmer for 30 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  • Stir in the butter. Serve warm or cold.
