If you have a food mill or tomato press, you can bake the apples with the skins on and extract them using the mill. Tart apples are better for this recipe.

- 6 large apples
- ¼ cup sugar
- ¼ tsp. salt
- 1 tsp. ground cinnamon
- ¼ tsp. ground nutmeg
- 2 whole cloves
- 2 Tbsp. butter
- Core and peel the apples. Place them in a small saucepan with 1" water. Bring to a boil over medium heat and cook for 15 minutes.
- Remove the apples from the water and either run them through a food mill or through a blender.
- Place the apple mash, sugar, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg in a skillet over low heat. Simmer for 30 minutes, stirring occasionally.
- Stir in the butter. Serve warm or cold.
