Sticky Rice (Kao Neaw)

Sticky rice, or sweet rice, has a higher starch level than regular white rice. It is sometimes called glutinous rice, not because it contains gluten, but because of its glue-like texture once cooked.

  • 1 cup sticky or sweet rice
  • 2½ cups water, room temperature


  • Soak rice in water for at least 4 hours and up to 12 hours. Steam in a bamboo or any type of steamer for 15 minutes.
  • Alternatively, wrap soaked sticky rice in a dampened towel and place on a plate. Microwave the rice for 3 minutes and check to see if it is done (rice is done when it is completely translucent). Cook in 1-minute increments until the rice is done.
