Sweet and Sour Sauce

This sauce is a base for other dipping sauces. Used as is, this is a great sauce for egg rolls, spring rolls and other appetizers.

  • 1⁄2 cup water
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1⁄2 cup white vinegar
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1 Tbsp. minced garlic
  • 1 tsp. Thai chili flakes


  • In a small, heavy saucepan, combine the sugar, water, vinegar, and salt. Bring to a rolling boil over medium heat. Stir to dissolve the sugar and salt and reduce heat to low. Simmer until the liquid thickens slightly to a light syrup, about 20 minutes.
  • Add minced garlic and roasted chili flakes. Turn off the heat and cool to room temperature.
