Wine-Poached Pears

This is very good as a dessert and can also be served as a side dish with poultry or pork. It can be made spicier with coriander or extra cinnamon.

  • 1 cup dry red wine
  • 4 whole cloves
  • 1" cinnamon stick
  • 4 tsp. Splenda
  • 4 sweet, ripe pears, peeled, cored, and halved


  • Mix the wine, cloves, cinnamon stick, and Splenda in a medium size saucepan over medium heat. Cover and let steep for 20 minutes.
  • Add the pears and cook, covered, at a simmer for 10 minutes. Turn off the heat and leave in the pan for another 10 minutes. Serve warm.
