Host a Tamalada: Mexican Christmas Tamale-Making Party

Mexico’s long and diverse history has helped create its unique and complex cuisine that we know and love today. La comida (food) is so important to the culture that preparation and cooking are typically social events, celebrations and a time to connect with your family and loved ones. Right now, we’re getting ready to celebrate one of Mexico’s most beloved holiday traditions: the tamalada!

What is a Tamale Party?

Though tamales are eaten all year long, they’re a culinary requirement during the holidays (La Navidad en especial). They might be delicious, but homemade tamales can be quite labor-intensive. Because of that, through the years, the preparation of this food has become a social event. Thus, for generations, families have gathered at Christmastime to make tamales – and lots of them.

This all-day fiesta, known as a tamalada, includes cooking, assembling and eating tamales that are made from scratch, with plenty of love. The masa, or dough, can be filled with whatever ingredients your family pleases. This year, enjoy creating Christmas tamales with seasonal ingredients (like these Walnut and Cranberry Tamales), whipping up traditional tamales verdes or putting together some sweet tamales de dulce for dessert.

Why Are Tamales Eaten at Christmas?

To many, it’s not Christmas without tamales. With origins dating back to the Mesoamerican times, tamales have long been associated with the holidays, and the charm continues. Beyond tradition and obvious appeal, tamales can be made in advance, are easy to pack up and transport and can be made in large batches to feed the entire family. Plus, with so many delicious things to put inside, you can make them as simple or as complicated as you want. When tamales are involved, you’re sure to have a ¡Feliz Navidad!

Whether you’re looking for a new flavor or recreating old favorites, you can stock up on the ingredients you need for this year’s tamalada right here. For more tamalada inspiration, check out our full collection of tamale recipes, or browse everyday Mexican-inspired meal inspiration.
